Tribal Collection Review RemarksJim Enote and Octavius Seowtewa during collection review visit April 6 and 7, 2009 (Events Record “Collection Review: Zuni Tribe, Review 1”): This is a moccasin anklet band. It would be tied over the ankle and oriented to sit over the back of the heel. Anklets such as these are used on dance moccasins worn by men and can be used in all kinds of dances. Notes on the catalog card and the IAF Catalog indicate that previous staff thought this was an item that could also be used as an arm band. Let it be clarified here that it is only an anklet and would not be used as an arm band. A note on the catalog card by Ed Ladd says the Zuni word for this item is we/lhe yak winn/e. Mr. Seowtewa and Mr. Enote agreed this is the Zuni word for it, but were unsure of the spelling; they will check on the spelling. The anklet band may be made available to anyone for research, photography, and publication. It has no special handling or storage requirements.
