Tribal Collection Review RemarksAccording to the participants in the Acoma collection review visit February 17-19, 2016 (Events Record “Collection Review: Acoma Pueblo Review 5”): This turtle was made using traditional Acoma materials. Dolores Lewis Garcia, the artist, stated that the paint came out a little on the brown side because she did not grind enough of the mineral paint into the paint mixture. Before slip and paint application she scrapes the exterior of her pieces with a Spam lid to prevent cracks and to smooth and even the surface (she saves the scrapings to make more pieces). She then smooths the surface with a stone. For her turtles she paints three lines at the end of each leg for toes and a dot on the tail. She still makes turtles sometimes and also miniature owls and canteens. She was not able to recall the date of this particular piece.
