Marla Allison

Culture: Laguna Pueblo

b. 1980

The School for Advanced Research was pleased to welcome Marla Allison as the 2010 Eric and Barbara Dobkin Native Artist Fellow. Marla Allison is an emerging artist and rising star in the Native art world. A member of Laguna Pueblo, she finds comfort in making her art and connecting with family, tradition, and the inspiration her community provides.

Influenced by Pueblo pottery from Laguna and Hopi as well as artists like Frieda Kahlo, Jean Michel Basquiat, Pablo Picasso, and M.C. Escher, Marla seamlessly combines different styles and media to create work uniquely her own. In her relatively short career, she has been featured in several exhibitions, including the “Young Artist Show” at the Heard Museum’s Berlin Gallery and “Seventh Heartbeat” at the Institute of American Indian Arts Museum. In 2008, she was the recipient of the Eric & Barbara Dobkin Innovation Award at the Santa Fe Indian Market.
