Tribal Collection Review RemarksOctavius Seowtewa during collection review visit February 17 and 18, 2010 (Events Record “Collection Review: Zuni Tribe, Review 4”): This piece depicts Hututu kokko (Longhorn). The technique used is channel inlay. The materials used are silver, spiny oyster, turquoise, jet, and mother of pearl. The catalog card states that a “white shell” is used in addition to the mother of pearl, but this is incorrect; all of the white shell is mother of pearl. The initials “AD” are engraved on the back of the piece. The catalog card states that the piece was made circa 1940s. However, if the initials are the artist’s, then it must have been made after that because there were no artists at Zuni using engraving until after the 1940s. However, if the initials were added later, perhaps by an owner or a dealer, then it is possible the piece was made in the 1940s. The dating could be more firmly established by determining if the initials belong to the artist or not.
