DescriptionA polychrome mug, orange and black on buff. The rim is painted black. The body is decorated with orange wave-like shapes outlined in black. A thin, black double line separates the body from the base. The base is painted orange. The handle is painted with an orange ladder-like design. A “Z” is incised on the bottom of the mug. The interior is glazed (done by Josephine Foard at Laguna Pueblo, c. 1900-1910).
Tribal Collection Review RemarksAccording to the participants in the Acoma collection review visit May 11-13, 2016 (Events Record “Collection Review: Acoma Pueblo Review 6”): The “Z” inscribed on the bottom of the mug happened pre-firing. Brian Vallo thinks this may be a much later piece based on the orange paint that is used which to him, looks to be commercial paint.

We will contact the Science Museum of Minnesota, St. Paul to inquire about their piece that Dwight Lanmon noted.
